If you own a home, you must maintain your property. Some issues are not obvious and can cause costly damage if not repaired. Here are four signs of a plumbing problem.
Slow Drains
A single slow drain could mean the pipe is clogged. Try to dislodge the clog using boiling water, baking soda and vinegar, or a drain snake. A simple clog is often an easy, DIY fix. However, if multiple drains in the home are slow, this could indicate a more severe problem.
When the plumbing throughout your home is slow to drain, you could have a block in the main sewer line. To locate the problem and remedy the situation, hire a plumber.
Foul Smells are Signs of a Plumbing Problem
A foul odor from the kitchen drain could be due to food trapped in the pipe. However, if you notice a sewage-like smell from any drain, this indicates a more severe problem.
An unpleasant smell may be due to the P-trap drying out. This problem is not uncommon in rarely used drains. Try running the water for a few minutes to see if the smell goes away. If you still detect a sewage odor, hire a plumber to troubleshoot and make repairs.
If the sewage smell is coming from the toilet, it may have a broken or loose seal. Check to see if the toilet is filling correctly. In most cases, it’s best to call a professional to remedy the problem.
Mold Growth
In nature, mold helps with the breakdown of organic materials. In your home, mold growth can cause damage to building materials and allergic reactions in family members and pets. Mold requires moisture to thrive. Homeowners sometimes discover mold patches in the bathroom or laundry room, often damp and humid areas.
When there are large areas of mold or mildew on the walls or ceilings, this might be a sign of a plumbing problem. If a pipe bursts behind the wall, it may be completely undetectable until mold begins to form. Other signs of excess moisture include peeling paint and bubbling wallpaper.
Signs of a Plumbing Problem: Dark Stains on Ceilings or Walls
Water stains are often yellow or brown. If you notice stains forming on your ceiling or wall, it could be due to a roof leak. Water damage may indicate a plumbing pipe has burst behind the wall. Hidden leaks are challenging to detect until there is a puddle or other visible sign. When you notice water stains, call a plumber to assess the situation.
